Peoria has long been recognized as a strong industrial center. In recent years the area has enjoyed a growing diversity in its business and industrial base, with the coming of new corporate centers and innovative high tech and other specialty firms, which have drawn to residence to the area. Peoria has begun to diversify its economy with infotech industries as well. Caterpillar remains the area's oldest and largest employer with more than 18,000 workers.
